Sommer openers, where the motor travels along the rail

We repair Sommer evo+, pro+ and older Synoris Direct Drive openers in Vancouver, WA and the nearby Clark County towns, from a carriage that will not budge to a Pearl remote or HomeLink button that will not pair.

Sommer around Clark County

Sommer is a German opener maker whose US arm lists Germany as the country of origin, a contact address in Charlotte, North Carolina and sales in more than 90 countries. Its current US range is the evo+, pro+ and GIGAline for heavy doors.

The design is the reason to know the name. On a conventional ceiling opener the motor sits at the back of the rail and pulls a chain or belt; on a Sommer, the motor rides in a carriage that pulls itself along a tensioned chain, and the chain stays still while the door moves.

Sommer sells through specialist dealers and its own US online store, which also lists parts for each line, including the earlier Synoris Direct Drive. We have no tie to Sommer; we read the label and order the parts that line calls for.

Is it a Sommer? How to check

The quickest test for a Sommer is to run the door and watch where the light and the motor noise travel.

  • The motor and its six-LED light ride in a carriage that moves along the rail with the door, with no motor box hanging at the back end.
  • A chain lying in the rail that never moves while the carriage runs along it.
  • On a pro+, a separate control housing with its own button, which can sit on the garage wall near the exit; an evo+ keeps its controls on the ceiling unit.
  • Four-button Pearl or Slider remotes, and a model number of 2060, 2080 or 2110 on the label.
  • On an older Synoris Direct Drive, a blue close limit switch and a yellow open limit switch, and a LEARN button where newer units have a RADIO button.

Sommer models in local garages

The model number on a current Sommer tracks its pulling force, 600, 800 or 1,100 newtons, rated for balanced doors only.

Sommer models common in Vancouver and Clark County
ModelSoldWhat to know
evo+ 2060Current600 newtons, listed as equal to 3/4 HP, for a balanced door up to 600 pounds. The stock rail suits an 8 foot door, and extension sets add length.
evo+ 2080 and 2110Current800 and 1,100 newtons, for balanced doors up to 1,100 and 1,500 pounds. Speed falls as force rises, from about 8.3 to 7 inches a second.
pro+ 2060, 2080 and 2110CurrentThe same three force ratings with a separate control unit that runs from an existing outlet and can mount on a wall by the door you walk out of.
GIGAlineCurrentThe heavy-load operator, rated for doors up to 1,100 pounds and 23 feet wide; the one to ask about for a wide shop door on a larger lot.
Synoris Direct DriveEarlier line, dates not publishedThe earlier carriage design, built with 550 and 800 newton carriages going by Sommer's parts list. Logic boards, carriages, limit switches and release parts are still listed.

Common Sommer problems and repairs

Each of these Sommer complaints points to a part on Sommer's own list and to a repair page here.

  • The carriage runs but the door stays put after a power cut

Someone pulled the release, and the carriage is no longer coupled to the door. A Sommer carriage engages at any point on the rail, so we re-engage it, run a full cycle and check that the cord hangs within reach. Garage Door Opener Repair, from $155

  • The door stops short of the floor or of full open

Limit stops on the rail set the travel, and Sommer sells replacements for both current and older lines. We reset or replace the stops, then rerun the reversal test once the travel is right. Garage Door Opener Repair, from $155

  • The opener labors or stalls on a door that used to run fine

Sommer's weight ratings assume a balanced door, and worn springs leave the carriage hauling the difference. We release the door, test its balance by hand and replace the torsion springs before any opener part is ordered. Garage Door Spring Replacement, from $245

  • A new Pearl remote or a car's HomeLink button will not pair

Current units learn through the RADIO button and take HomeLink through a small module that plugs into the carriage. We fit the right module, pair each button, and switch off nearby LED bulbs while we do it. Garage Door Remote and Keypad Programming, from $105

  • The door turns around on its way down

The safety beam pair near the floor has lost its line of sight or its wire. We realign or replace the beams from Sommer's kit and confirm the door reverses when it meets an object. Garage Door Safety Sensor Repair, from $125

How the moving motor changes a Sommer repair

On a Sommer the diagnosis starts at the carriage, because the motor, the light and the radio interface all ride in it. Sommer built it to come off without taking the rail down, so a new one is a single part swap.

The parts list shows the rest of the design: brushes where the carriage meets the rail, a separate chain, limit stops, a magnetic isolator, and a release mechanism sized to the carriage. A label photo tells us which list applies before anything is ordered.

Repair a Sommer, or replace it with another make?

Repair is the usual answer while the carriage, board set and limit parts are still listed, and they are for the evo+, the pro+ and the Synoris Direct Drive.

Switching makes means a new rail and drive as well as a new motor, because a Sommer rail and chain belong to the Sommer carriage. It is worth it when an older Synoris needs a carriage and a board at once, or when the door has outgrown the force the unit was rated for.

Questions from Sommer owners

How do I know if my garage door opener is a Sommer?

Run the door and watch the light: on a Sommer it travels along the rail, because the motor rides in the carriage. The chain inside the rail stays still. A label reading 2060, 2080 or 2110, or a four-button Pearl remote clipped to the visor, settles the question.

Does the chain on a Sommer opener need adjusting?

Not as routine upkeep, since Sommer calls the design maintenance-free for most garages. The chain is held under tension and never moves; the carriage climbs along it. A chain hanging slack or a carriage that slips points to a fault, so we check the chain mounting and the carriage together rather than simply tightening.

How long do Sommer opener parts take to reach Clark County?

Sommer's US store lists parts by line but publishes no lead times, so you hear the timing from us when the order goes in. A clear label photo lets us pick between the evo+ and pro+ list and the Synoris Direct Drive list before the first visit, which saves a trip.

Is Direct Drive a different brand from Sommer?

Not when it appears beside Sommer: Sommer's own US parts store and HomeLink instructions list Direct Drive operators alongside its Synoris line. Other makers also use "direct drive" as a plain description of a design, so the carriage riding the rail and a photo of the label settle which opener you have.

Can a Sommer opener run a heavy insulated or wood door?

Yes, as long as the springs balance it, since Sommer's weight ratings assume a correctly balanced door. The 2060, 2080 and 2110 are rated for 600, 1,100 and 1,500 pounds on that basis. The springs carry the weight and the carriage only moves it, so a heavy door on tired springs needs new springs first.
