Skylink openers, universal remotes and keypads that quit working
We repair Skylink Atoms and side mount openers across Vancouver, WA and Clark County, and we sort out Skylink keypads and universal remotes added to other makes, starting with the small receiver Skylink fits at the wall button.

Skylink around Clark County
Skylink, established in 1990, runs a sales office in Mississauga, Ontario, a US distribution center in Ontario, California, and its own factory in Vietnam. Its brands include Atoms for openers, and most of the range is built for owners to install.
A Skylink in a Clark County garage can therefore be a whole opener ordered online, or just a keypad or remote added to an opener of another make.
Skylink's universal pieces bring their own receiver. Instead of learning the opener's radio, a kit fixes a small receiver over or beside the wall button, and that receiver works the opener through the button's circuit, which is why one keypad can serve many makes.
Is it a Skylink? How to check
Look first for a small box at the wall button, then read the model numbers on the remote and the motor unit.
- A small receiver fixed over or beside the wall button, a sign that a Skylink universal keypad or remote kit was added to an opener of another make.
- Remotes with 318 in the model number, such as the MK-318 keychain, the GG-318 visor clip and the HB-318 car button.
- A backlit keypad under a weatherproof cover that runs on a single AAA battery, as the KN-1 and KN-318 do.
- An Atoms motor unit on the ceiling with an LCD wall console, which lets the opener be set up from the floor.
- A compact side mount box on the wall at one end of the door, from the G2 family.
Skylink models in local garages
Skylink publishes model numbers but not production years, so these rows group what its store and manual library list.
| Model | Sold | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Atoms ATR-1723CK | Current | A 3/4 HPf DC chain drive on a 7 foot rail kit, packed with two three-button remotes, a keypad and safety sensors. Battery backup is sold separately. |
| Atoms ATR-1723CKW and ATR-1723BKW | Current | Chain (CKW) and belt (BKW) versions with a Wi-Fi adapter for the Orbit Home app and an LCD wall console. Rail extension kits stretch either one to an 8 or 10 foot door. |
| G2, G2D and G2K side mount | Current | A 12 volt DC side mount with 318 MHz rolling code, built-in 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for the Orbit Home app and a 12 watt LED panel. |
| AtomsPro, AN-2712-7C, EQ, IQ and ANR series, G1 side mount | Years not published | Earlier or other Skylink openers that still have manuals in Skylink's download library, which tell us what still fits. |
| KN-1 keyless entry | Current | The universal keypad: a wireless pad plus a smart button receiver that replaces or sits in parallel with the wall button. Skylink says it works with most national brand openers. |
| KN-318 keyless entry | Current | A keypad Skylink lists for its own openers, all of them, rather than as a universal for other makes. |
| MF-1 remote kit and 318TR conversion kit | Current | Remote kits whose receiver mounts over or connects to the wall button. The MF-318 receiver runs on two AA batteries, and the 318TR leaves the original remote working. |
Common Skylink problems and repairs
Each Skylink complaint below has a usual cause and a repair page behind it.
-
The keypad ignores every code for a while, then works again
Ten wrong codes lock a Skylink keypad for 10 minutes. If it stays dead after that, we fit a fresh AAA battery, re-enter the code and check the receiver it talks to. Garage Door Remote and Keypad Programming, from $105
-
Add-on remotes stop working while the wall button still does
The receiver at the wall button has lost power or its connection. We replace the MF-318's two AA batteries or fit Skylink's adapter, then reseat the wires. Garage Door Remote and Keypad Programming, from $105
-
An Atoms opener reverses or refuses to close
The ID-001 safety sensors near the floor have lost alignment or a wire. We realign or replace the pair and confirm the door turns back when it meets an object on the way down. Garage Door Safety Sensor Repair, from $125
-
A Skylink opener strains on a door that has grown heavy
We pull the release, check balance by hand and replace worn torsion springs, so the opener is moving a door rather than lifting it. Garage Door Spring Replacement, from $245
-
An older Skylink unit with a failing motor or board
Skylink's store lists sensors, consoles, remotes, rail kits and batteries. When the motor or board is the fault, we check for the part and price a replacement opener beside it. Garage Door Opener Installation, from $545
What pairs with what in the Skylink range
Skylink keypads and remotes reach an opener in one of two ways, through the opener's own Skylink receiver or through an add-on receiver at the wall button.
Because the add-on receiver joins the wall button circuit, it works the opener the way a press of the button does. A newer opener with a multi-function wall console is the case to ask about: send us a photo of that console, and we confirm the receiver has a plain circuit to tie into.
| Product | How it connects | What Skylink says it works with |
|---|---|---|
| KN-1 keypad | A smart button receiver that replaces or parallels the wall button | Most national brand openers |
| KN-318 keypad | Pairs with a Skylink opener | All Skylink openers |
| MF-1 remote kit | An MF-318 receiver fixed over the wall button with two screws | Any opener brand |
| 318TR kit | A receiver connected to the wall button; the old remote keeps working | Most opener brands |
| MK-1 keychain kit | GB-318C receivers, sold separately | Up to three doors from one remote |
Will a Skylink side mount fit your garage?
A G2 side mount fits a sectional door with about 2 inches of headroom and 5.2 inches of side room where it mounts. Skylink rates it for single doors up to 14 feet high and doubles up to 180 square feet.
It also needs a receptacle within reach of its 4 foot cord. We plug into one that is already there; a new receptacle means an electrician and a permit before the unit goes up.
Questions from Skylink owners
Why did my Skylink keypad stop accepting my code?
It has probably locked itself after ten wrong entries, which shuts a Skylink keypad out for 10 minutes. Wait it out and try the code once. If it still ignores you, replace the single AAA battery, then pair the keypad with its receiver again, following the manual or with us on site.
Will a Skylink keypad work with a newer LiftMaster or Chamberlain opener?
The KN-1 is the Skylink keypad sold as universal, and Skylink says it suits most national brand openers through a receiver at the wall button. It names no makes or models. On a unit with a multi-function wall console, a photo of the console tells us whether the receiver can join it before you buy.
What is the small box a Skylink universal remote kit adds by the wall button?
It is the kit's own receiver, which hears the Skylink remote or keypad and works the opener through the wall button wiring. The MF-318 mounts over the button with two screws and runs on two AA batteries or an adapter. On the 318TR kit, Skylink notes the original remote keeps working too.
Can a Skylink Atoms opener be repaired?
Often, when the fault sits in a part Skylink sells: safety sensors, wall consoles, remotes, keypads, rail extensions or the backup battery. A failed motor or control board is a different case: we check whether the part can be had and set its cost beside a new opener.
How do I tell a Skylink remote from the one that came with my opener?
Read the model number on the remote: Skylink numbers such as MK-318, GG-318 or HB-318 mark it. Those 318 series remotes pair with a Skylink receiver, either inside a Skylink opener or in an add-on box at the wall button, so on another make, look for that box beside the button.
Can one Skylink remote run two garage doors?
Yes, with a receiver for each door. The 318TR keychain remote has two buttons but needs a second 318R receiver for the second door, and the MK-1 keychain runs up to three doors with GB-318C receivers bought separately. Each receiver mounts at its own door's wall button and learns the same remote.
