Questions and answers

Garage door questions, answered before you book

Straight answers on booking a garage door repair anywhere from Vancouver, WA to Longview, staying safe around a moving door, opener upgrades and where we work. Service, symptom and area pages answer their own questions too.

How booking a repair works

A call, a text or the quote form all start the same way, with the symptom or a photo and a price you agree to first.

How do I book a garage door repair with Columbia Spring & Cable?

Call or text the number at the top of the page, or send the quote form. Describe what the door is doing or send a photo, and we name the probable repair and its starting price. If that suits you, we book an arrival window within the posted hours, and in most cases it can be that same day.

Do I need to be home while the garage door is being repaired?

Be there when we arrive and when we finish; the middle can run without you. At the start we look at the door together and agree on the price, and at the end we run it through its tests while you watch. In between, you are free to get on with your day indoors.

Can I book a garage door repair for a home I do not live in?

Yes, as long as you can approve the price and someone can open the garage for us. That covers a parent's house, a rental you own or a place you are getting ready to sell. Tell us who will be there, and we settle the price with you before any work starts, then show the finished door to whoever lets us in.

What should I have ready to get a price from a photo?

Turn on the garage light and stand back far enough to fit the whole door in one shot, taken from inside. Then take a close photo of whatever looks wrong: the coil on the shaft over the opening, a cable at a bottom corner, or the label on the opener motor. Add your cross streets or ZIP code and a line on what the door does.

Staying safe around a moving garage door

Four habits that keep a heavy moving door from hurting anyone, and none of them needs a tool.

Is it safe to walk or drive under a garage door while it is moving?

No, wait until the door has stopped at the top before you walk or drive under it. The photo eyes and the reversing feature are a backup, not a reason to race the door. Children should never treat a closing door as a game, and nobody should duck under one that is on its way down.

How often should I check that my garage door still reverses?

Once a month, which is what opener manuals call for under the federal safety rule. Rest a 2 by 4 on its wide face on the slab below the door, then close it from the wall button; it has two seconds after touching the wood to reverse. Next, break the photo eye beam with a broom handle while the door is closing, and it should stop and go back up. If either check fails, keep the opener off.

How high should the garage door wall button be in a home with small children?

Mount it at least five feet above the floor with the door in view, which puts it beyond a small child's reach. That is the height opener instructions call for under the federal safety rule. Keep remotes off low shelves and out of toy bins as well, and if your button sits lower, moving it up is a short job.

Why should a garage door that has come off its track stay where it is?

Because a door out of its track is only partly supported, and moving it can drop a section or bring the whole door down. The rollers that left the track no longer carry the weight, and the springs and cables may be pulling unevenly. Leave the opener unplugged, keep children, pets and cars away from it, and let us set the door back in its track.

Before you change or automate an opener

Any opener change starts with the door it has to move, because a balanced door and working photo eyes come before anything else.

Can a new opener go on an older garage door?

Yes, if the door is balanced and the top section can hold the opener bracket. The springs do the lifting, so we first check that the door stays put about halfway with the opener disconnected. A new opener also needs a ceiling outlet near the motor, and where none exists, adding one is electrician work that needs a permit.

Is an auto-close timer or app closing safe on a garage door?

Yes on a sectional door with working photo eyes, because the opener warns for at least five seconds before an unattended close. It still has to reverse for anything in the way. Federal rules bar unattended closing on one-piece tilt-up doors and swing doors, so timers and app closing stay off those. Any add-on smart module has to leave the photo eyes and reversing feature in control.

Can one garage door opener run two doors?

No, each door needs its own opener, because an opener is fastened to one door's top section, or to its spring shaft in the case of a wall-mount unit. The controls are what two doors can share: a remote with two or three buttons, or a car's built-in buttons, can run both once each opener is paired. Each door keeps its own photo eyes and reversing setting.

Where we work, all north of the river

We cover Vancouver, every Clark County community north to Yacolt and Amboy, and the Cowlitz County towns on I-5 up to Castle Rock, all in Washington.

Which places does Columbia Spring & Cable serve?

Two Washington counties: Clark County, Vancouver included, and Cowlitz County along I-5. On the Clark side that means Vancouver's neighborhoods, the cities of Ridgefield, Battle Ground, Camas, La Center, Washougal and Yacolt, and places outside any city such as Felida, Hazel Dell, Orchards and Salmon Creek. Woodland sits on the county line, and Kalama, Kelso, Longview and Castle Rock lie beyond it. The areas page lists every place with its own page.

Do you take garage door jobs on the Oregon side of the river?

We work north of the river, in Washington only, from Vancouver and Camas up I-5 to Longview and Castle Rock. Keeping to one side of the Columbia keeps our routes short and puts every invoice under Washington tax rules. If your home is anywhere in Clark County or along I-5 in Cowlitz County, you are in our area.

How far north on I-5 does your garage door service run?

Through Woodland and Kalama to Kelso, Longview and Castle Rock in Cowlitz County. Each of those towns has its own area page covering how we get there and the kinds of houses and garages you find in it. For an address past Castle Rock, call or text first so we can check the drive before anything is booked.

What if my street is missing from the garage door service areas page?

Send us your cross streets or ZIP code and we can confirm the visit before you book. Area pages exist for the larger neighborhoods and towns, and the streets and rural roads between them are part of the same service area. Include the ZIP code when you text a photo, and the reply covers both questions at once.

Want a price before anyone drives over?

Call and describe what the door is doing, or text a photo of the door and the spring above it. You hear the likely repair and where its price starts, then decide.
