Signs you need this repair
Security calls grow out of a few specific worries, usually after a move, a lost remote or before a trip.
- The outside T-handle spins freely or the key will not turn
- The slide bolt no longer reaches the hole in the track, or the door lifts with it set
- A remote went missing with a car, a teenager or a former tenant
- You are leaving for a few weeks and want the door shut tight
- The detached garage out back has a side door with a tired lock
- You heard about the coat hanger trick and wonder whether your door is exposed
How a locks and security visit runs
A security visit walks the garage the way someone outside would see it, from the top of the overhead door to the side door.
Check the release from the outside view
The emergency release on the trolley lets the door run by hand, which is its job, but on some doors it can be hooked from outside through the space above a closed door. We look at that space, the top weatherstrip and where the cord hangs, then fit a shield or guard so a wire pushed through the top cannot catch the lever. From inside, the cord still works with a normal pull.
Fix or fit the manual locks
An inside slide bolt has to line up with a hole in the track, and when the door settles or the track shifts, it stops reaching. An outside T-handle turns a cam that drives bars into both tracks. We realign, lubricate or replace them. On a door with an opener, we set things up so a locked bolt cannot leave the motor fighting it.
Turn on the opener's own locks
Plenty of wall controls carry a lock button or switch that shuts out every remote while it is on, which is handy when you travel. Some openers also accept an automatic deadbolt that throws into the track each time the door closes. We set up whichever your model supports and show you how to switch it off again.
Reset every code
The opener's memory is wiped clean of remotes and keypads, only the remotes you hold get re-added, and you pick a fresh keypad code. Car buttons are retrained. If you are selling or trading in a car, erase its HomeLink buttons too, so whoever owns the car next cannot open your garage.
Look at the side door and the glass
On a detached garage, the side door belongs to the same security picture as the overhead door. We check the strike plate and the screws holding it, fit longer screws that bite into the framing, and point out any glass that lets someone reach the lock or see what is stored inside. A lock that needs a locksmith gets named as such.
Why alley garages in older Vancouver neighborhoods need better locks
A detached garage on an alley sits out of sight and earshot of the house, so its locks carry more of the load than an attached garage's do.
Carter Park, in the city's own description, has garages located on alleys, and the Hough housing around it went up mainly between about 1890 and 1945. Listings in Shumway show the same pattern, with detached garages reached from the alley behind the house.
If yours has a manual door, an outside T-handle lock plus an inside slide bolt covers both directions. If it has an opener, a release shield and the lock setting on the wall control do the same job, and a motion light on the alley side helps as well.
Can a coat hanger open a garage door?
On some doors, yes: a bent wire pushed through the top gap can catch the emergency release and free the door from the opener, and a shield or guard on the release stops it.
The trick needs two things: room to slip a wire over the top section, and a release lever hanging where a hook can reach. A plastic shield around the lever, or a guard that only answers a straight downward pull, closes that path. Federal rules still require a release handle that can be set to hang six feet above the floor, within reach.
Do not tie the cord up out of reach or cut it off. When an ice storm cuts the power, pulling that cord is what frees the car.
How opener lock mode and keypad habits secure a garage
The opener already has security settings, and using them does more than adding hardware. Turn on the wall control lock when the house will be empty for days, and every remote stays shut out until you turn it off.
Keypad codes leak. Painters, dog walkers, a house cleaner and a former roommate may all know yours. Change it when someone stops needing it, skip house numbers and birthdays, and wipe the keypad face now and then so worn keys do not spell out the code.
A visor remote is a key to the house whenever the car sits in the driveway. A keychain remote that comes inside with you, or phone control with no visor remote left in the car, closes that gap. Our break-in prevention guide covers the rest of the house.
What changes the price
One slide bolt or one T-handle lock, fitted and lined up, is the posted line, and added hardware or code work builds from there.
- An outside T-handle lock with new lock bars and cables to both tracks
- An automatic deadbolt added to an opener that supports one
- A release shield or guard, priced at the part
- A full code reset with new remotes or a new keypad
- Track or door alignment so a bolt can reach its keeper
- Smart lock or app setup, including a Wi-Fi hub where the opener lacks one
When replacing beats repairing
A new rolling-code opener beats a better bolt when the old opener runs on DIP switches, whose single fixed code can be copied.
Locks themselves are small parts, so a new door is seldom the security answer, and a sound opener with lock mode and a fresh code needs only the hardware covered above.
Locks and security: questions and answers
Should I use the slide lock on a garage door that has an opener?
Only with the opener unplugged or switched to lock, or with an automatic lock the opener controls. If someone presses a remote while the slide bolt is set, the motor fights the bolt and can buckle the top section or chew up its own gear. For trips, the lock setting on the wall control is the safer habit.
Can you fix an outside garage door T-handle lock that spins without locking?
Usually, yes. A spinning handle tends to mean the cam inside has stripped or the bars and cables running to the tracks have come loose. We replace the lock body or the bars, line the bars up with the slots in each track, and check that the door cannot lift with the handle turned to locked.
Does a release shield stop someone opening the garage door from outside?
It stops the hook method, where a bent wire slipped over the top section pulls the emergency release. The shield or guard covers the lever so only a straight pull from inside works. It changes nothing about how you use the cord yourself during a power outage.
How do I secure the side door on a detached garage?
Start with a solid strike plate held by long screws into the framing, then a deadbolt if the door has only a knob lock. Cover or frost any glass near the lock so nobody can reach through or look in. We check that door on every detached garage security visit and tell you what needs a locksmith.
Is there a smart lock that locks the garage door each time it closes?
Yes, some openers can drive an automatic deadbolt that throws into the track whenever the door shuts. A Wi-Fi opener or a hub then lets you confirm from your phone that the door is down. Federal rules keep app closing off one-piece tilt-up doors, so those stay on manual locks.
